“We dream about the day when society will provide this incredible solution to all legally blind individuals who could use it, regardless of their ability to pay.”- eSight

I had a fantastic conversation with one of the “Vision Advocates” at eSight. Here is a quick rundown of how this technology came to be and a little about it. eSight started 10 years ago in Ottawa Canada because an Engineer was determined to give his sisters the ability to see again regardless of Stargardt disease. The disease causes progressive damage or degeneration of the macula, which is a small area in the center of the retina that is responsible for vision straight ahead. It took about 7 years but in 2012 the first pair of eSight glasses came out. eSight said that they want to provide this technology to anyone in need. You can speak to a live person at 1-855-837-4448 or 1-877-993-0432 Monday through Friday 9:00-5:00 PM EST.

eSight camera captures everything you see in real time and displays a clear image on two OLED screens in front of the user’s eye with no lag in video. It does give legally blind individuals the ability to see with the technology but it’s dependent on the degree of vision loss and condition. eSight glasses have been created so you can do ANY activity in daily life besides driving because that is illegal and swimming because they are not waterproof. A few more fun facts are that it can take pictures and it has Bluetooth. It has a very bright LED light on it if you’re in the dark. eSight sends you two batteries. Each battery can hold a charge for about four hours so that’s enough to get through your average work day. It does not record video and only hooks up to the internet for updates.

Here is what you can expect when you go to the website and ask to be contacted. eSight will send you an email from the VP, Outreach and Advocacy. Once you click the button labeled “Continue Your eSight Journey!” eSight will collect information and sends you five links in the email to gather information as listed below:

1. The Basics

2. About Your Condition

3.eSight Affordability

4. More About You

5.The Story

This is not just your basic questionnaire as they want people to reach out. Yes, eSight will ask questions regarding insurance and how much you are able to put towards purchasing the device but they want to know more. “More About You” is where the questions are a bit more personal.

The cost of the glasses cost $9,995.

eSight was very adamant they will do everything they can to help people that need this technology.
